A New Beginning at Emma’s Torch

At Emma’s Torch, we’re no strangers to celebration. Whether it’s a graduation, a birthday, or the quiet triumph of mastering a new skill in the kitchen, joy fills our spaces every day. For years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing these moments as a supporter—watching from the sidelines as our students grow, flourish, and begin again.
But this past April, the celebration came to me.
With the help of our incredible team, my fiancé planned a surprise proposal in the very heart of our Carroll Gardens café, a space that has come to mean so much to so many. From the glow of the candlelight and the scent of fresh flowers, to a menu lovingly curated by Chef Alex Harris, every detail reflected care, intention and love. It was, without question, the most delicious food I’ve ever eaten (and yes, I fully admit my bias).
Surrounded by our closest friends, sitting at the head of the long table, laughing and sharing all my favorite dishes, I was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. It was one of the most joyous moments of my life, and a celebration of a new beginning.
In many ways, that night reflected everything Emma’s Torch stands for. Each day, we welcome refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking into our kitchens, individuals who are courageously stepping into a new chapter. They bring resilience, strength, talent, and hope. Watching our students begin again, rebuilding not just careers, but confidence, purpose and community, is the greatest honor of our work.
As I looked around that evening—at our students, our staff, our friends, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful parallel: just as my partner and I are beginning our next chapter, so are our students. This space holds transformation in every corner—personal and collective, joyful and brave.
